Singletrack High: Upcoming Film Explores NorCal Students’ Love for Mountain Biking (Video)

Many kids in America stop riding bikes in high school. When splashing through puddles and racing around the park is no longer cool, two wheels get traded in for four.

But for hundreds kids in northern California, the ride never stops—it gets faster. These are the student-athletes of the NorCal High School Cycling League. They come from the mountains, the suburbs, and the city. Some ride carbon fiber race bikes, others, old steel clunkers. They ride to win, to finish, or just to escape. For six weekends every spring, they don their school colors, roll up to the start line, and fly.

For the past seven months, Bay Area-based Pedal Born Pictures followed a diverse group of these student-athletes through the 2012 high school mountain bike racing season. With the generous support of Specialized Bicycle Components, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, and GoPro, Pedal Born documented the importance of getting kids unplugged, outdoors, and on the bike. The final product—Singletrack High—will be released in January 2013.
