Visiting the Caribbean on a Budget

There’s no doubt about it – the Caribbean is a long-standing bastion of sun, sand and that unmistakable rippling blue water. From tales of swashbuckling pirates to Jimmy Buffet’s rummy good times accompanied by a steel drum backdrop – if you’ve never been to the Caribbean, you’re in for the treat of a lifetime. The Caribbean is a perfect spot for getting away from it all. And while getting away from it all sounds exotic (and it is), it doesn’t have to break the bank. There are ways around spending a fortune to get to some beautiful island escapes. Here are some of the best ways to get to experience the Caribbean on a budget.

Budget travel tips

Getting the most out of your Caribbean vacation is largely dependent on what you’d like to see and do while on your trip. Many companies offer all-inclusive resort access to a variety of locales spread throughout the islands. Great deals can be had going this route (airfare is often included), but the resort itself tends to be the bulk of the vacation experience rather than the local culture of the place you’ll be visiting. If weather, lounging about the pool, and not having to worry about bringing your wallet with you are what you have in mind when it comes to a Caribbean vacation, then one of the all-inclusive resorts may be for you.

Caribbean Budget Travel: Caribbean cruise

Consider taking a cruise to save money. Photo credit: Sonja via Flickr.

Saving money for the rest of us needn’t be a challenge, however. There are plenty of ways to save money in the Caribbean. Looking for cheap flights is perhaps the first stop for many of us. As aforementioned, many of the all-inclusive resort trips offer prices with airfare included, so that may be an option if you’re looking to save some coin. Some quick tips for the rest of us Caribbean travelers here:

  • If you’re going to the Caribbean, consider traveling during the slow season (mid-April until about November). During this time hotels can be had for hundreds less, and the islands are generally less crowded (almost always a good thing). Also, take a look at Delta, JetBlue, and Air Canada, as they’ve all increased their Caribbean offerings in recent months and JetBlue especially flies to some great budget Caribbean stops like Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
  • Consider taking a cruise. Cruise ships hit many famous ports of call and cater to a large audience. From dancing waiters to all-hours entertainment, a cruise might just be your best option – especially if it leaves out of a budget-friendly port like New Orleans or Orlando.
  • Rent a condo. If you’re traveling in a group, renting a condo is a great way to interact with the local culture and save some money. Condos can be had for much less than hotel rooms, but do require a bit of extra planning. If you’re the type who doesn’t balk at logistics, consider looking up local condo rentals or even housing swaps.
  • Consider flying round-trip. Even if you want to see more than one island during your budget Caribbean escape, flying into and out-of the same hub saves you considerable money.
  • Take a bus and don’t forget to barter. Buses are a popular method of transportation around the islands and you can help save your pocketbook by using some group transportation rather than hailing a taxi for all your locomotion needs. Additionally, ask your resort/hotel/condo association if they have scooters for rent. Many do, and scooters can scoot you around the island for as little as $20/day.

Budget-friendly Caribbean Islands

So you’ve done your best and planned accordingly. You’ve become an expert on off-season deals, the Caribbean condo market and you’ve even gone ahead and learned how to home-brew your own sunscreen. Now, what are the most budget-friendly Caribbean islands you can visit?

Well, with the above money-saving tips in mind, it might help to have a budget dossier of budget-friendly Caribbean islands at hand. Well, here you go, young gum-shoe:

Punta Cana Dune Buggy

Find all kinds of outdoor activities in Punta Cana

The Dominican Republic is a great option for the budget traveler. Its capital Santo Domingo is the oldest continually inhabited European settlement in the Americas and one of the Caribbean’s largest cities. There’s great Old World charm here, and plenty of exciting free and cheap things to do. Travelers always love walking the streets of Calle de las Damas (which is the oldest street in the New World), visiting the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, and the Park of Three Eyes of Water – all accomplished for very little coin.

Punta Cana is probably the most visited tourist town, and flights and can found direct and round-trip for under $400 if you plan ahead. Once here, hotels are often cheap (~$74/night) food is inexpensive and full of Caribbean flavor, and your activity selection is incredible. Punta Cana has many outdoor adventure activities to indulge in if you want to splurge (anyone say “dunebuggy ride through the white sand beaches?”), as well as a great many beaches famous for their lounge-ability and their picturesque photo quality. Not a bad stop, I must say.

Caribbean Budget Travel; Dunn's River Falls

Dunn’s River Falls

Next up on one of the best vacation spots for budget-minded travelers to the Caribbean is Jamaica. Another all-inclusive resort haven, there are many on the island and offer great deals to those interested, but if you chose to opt-out there are still plenty of great options that will save you money. Your money goes farther here and that means hotels and food are cheaper while still being wonderfully unique and interesting. Additionally, Jamaica is a great island for those who like to be outdoors and have adventures, and many of these activities are free.

Seven Mile Beach in Negril is routinely touted as one of the best beaches in the world, and Dunn’s River Falls and Park is a waterfall climb and play-fest that is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So whether you’re in Montego Bay or Kingston or Negril, you’re sure to have a fabulous time not spending much money.

Caribbean Budget Travel; Old San Juan

Old San Juan

Puerto Rico is another great budget Caribbean getaway. Here, as a U.S. territory, most everyone speaks both English and Spanish, the local businesses take the U.S. dollar, and you have over 500 years of great architecture and culture to wander through at your own pace. Flights are direct from multiple hub cities form the U.S. and elsewhere, and there are a wide variety of airline carriers to chose from. In addition, if you’re coming from the U.S., it’s only a short trip away. Many further ventures into the Caribbean begin from Puerto Rico, so it’s also a great jumping off point.

San Juan is the capital city of Puerto Rico, and Old San Juan (El Viejo San Juan) is a charming place to have dinner, do some shopping, or simply stroll through and soak up some local culture. It’s also a great romantic escape. If you’re looking to save some coin and get a unique experience at the same time, consider looking into staying in a parador – a small, budget, privately owned hotel often located on retired plantations.

Caribbean Budget Travel; St Thomas

St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands

If it’s your first time to the Caribbean, my humble suggestion is a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands. This little cluster of islands is another U.S. territory, so the dollar is accepted and the islands are serviced by many international air carriers. Flights here are cheap (relatively), as is accommodation. The water is crystal blue, the vibe is laid back, but there are still some nightclubs and adventures to be had.

In addition, the British Virgin Islands are next door, and so one of the best ways to save money is to get a group together and charter your own boat. Combining income, a boat and lively skipper can be procured for much less than you might expect, and you and your friends can sail the high seas exploring the islands at whim. If you’re looking for true escapes and Caribbean feel, then consider the U.S. Virgin Islands a great jumping-off point.

Montserrat. This little island boasts a population of only about 4700 residents and though it may seem trickier to get to than some, makes the list because once here you don’t want to leave. The origination for love stories around the world, this balmy little Caribbean Island has peace, tranquility, and photo opportunities in spades as well as an Irish heritage which you didn’t see coming. Whether you get here by flying in or taking the ferry (more budget-friendly), you’ll have plenty of opportunity to hike the trails here which are rich in palm jungle flora and fauna. As for accommodations, well, there’s only one hotel on the island, but many choose to rent villas for around the tune of $700/week. Not too shabby, and one of the most romantic getaways in the world.

The Caribbean for Foodies

The food of the Caribbean is the living product of its tumultuous history, with influences and ingredients introduced from all over the world. Back in the 11th century, the islands’ first inhabitants, the indigenous Arawak and Taíno Indians, subsisted on the fruits, vegetables (guavas, yams, casavas), fish, and mainly poultry then available and they cooked in simple pots or roasted over open fires. Sometime in the 12th century, fiercely hot, pepper sauces were added to the culinary mix by the Carib people, who migrated from South America and lent their name to the region.

Guavas, Best Caribbean Food

The Caribbean Sea soon became a crossroads of culture. Colonizing Europeans rushed to set up tobacco plantations on the islands, and as they emigrated they brought European trees with them. What we see today as Caribbean specialties – fruits such as limes, lemons, bananas, and plantains, along with ginger, date palms, coconuts, sugar cane, and tamarind – were all introduced from Spain in the 16th century. Breadfruit, another firm staple, was brought in from Polynesia, and later American plantation owners imported corn, potatoes, beans, squash, and even chili pepper to the islands.

When the plantation owners converted from growing tobacco to labor-intensive sugar production in the 17th century, slavery was introduced and the cuisine changed again. African foods were combined with local staples; thus saltfish, fish cakes, okra, and ackee merged into the Caribbean lexicon of food.

After years of social unrest, slavery was abolished between 1834-48, but soon cheap labor was being imported from the Far East, adding another dimension to Caribbean cooking. Rice was introduced from China – now an everyday basic – and spices such as cumin and turmeric were brought in from India.

On top of this great influx of foodstuffs and influences, each of the 22 island territories of the Caribbean has added its own individual style to its own cooking; few islands produce exactly the same dishes although strong mutual roots are evident.

Traditional Caribbean foods

Perhaps the most famous dish of the Windies is jerk; it originates from Jamaica, where African slaves cooked pork or chicken slowly over coals – the world’s first BBQ – after being marinaded with hot pepper sauces. Curry goat also comes from Jamaica – via India – and is slow cooked with spices and hot chilies until the meat is flaked and tender. It is usually served with rice, boiled potato, or fried plantain, and can also be made from mutton.

Rice and beans is a fundamental Caribbean dish, originally coming from Costa Rica, and either served with meat to pad it out or on its own as a snack. It can be pepped up with anything from hot chilies to oregano or coconut, depending on where you are eating it. Roti is also served all over the Caribbean but is most popular and flavorsome on the heavily Indian-influenced islands of Trinidad and Tobago. It consists of flatbread stuffed with curried chicken or dhalpuri (split peas) and liberally doused with heart-stopping ‘mother-in-law’ hot pepper sauce.

West African in origin, Callolo soup is made from a spinach-like vegetable that varies from island group to island group. Taro or dasheen are often used and the soup can be flavored with coconut, okra, tomatoes, and onions. In Barbados it is served with macaroni pie, in Grenada with meat and rice. Beef steak is slow cooked for up to 10 hours to produce Cuban ropa vieja (literally ‘old clothes’), a tasty spiced stew served up with bell peppers and cilantro and popular in the western Caribbean.

The cuisine scene today

Atlantis in the Bahamas

For many years the reputation of Caribbean cuisine was non-existent. There was little more to eat than the homogenized pseudo-European dishes served in the hotels that sprung up when mass tourism first hit the islands. There was a dearth of top-class restaurants and the traditional gastronomy of the region, so heavily influenced by its history, all but disappeared for everyone apart from the lucky locals.

Today all has changed. Barbados led the way with the advent of top-class restaurants in the gold-plated hotels of its west coast, and now many world-famous chefs have set up shop here, from the UK’s Michelin-starred Gary Rhodes at Calabash on Grenada to Paul Newman at the prohibitively expensive Coyaba on Provo in the equally expensive enclave of Turks and Caicos. Blue by Eric Ripert, the four-Michelin-star French chef, on Grand Cayman is an offshoot of New York’s peerless Le Bernardin; the Bahamas boasts Michelin-starred sushi chain Nobu, owned by Japanese superchef Nobu Matsuhisa  and Robert de Niro, at the Atlantis; while renowned French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten runs the brigade at Dune in the exotic One and Only Ocean Club, both hotels on Paradise Island.

Caribbean food at its best

A surge in exciting gastronomy has hit the whole Caribbean region. Island-wise, St Martin/St Maarten, the cosmopolitan French/Dutch hybrid island, has gained a reputation for some of the best international restaurants in the archipelago; and Guadeloupe’s tamarind- and spice-infused Creole cuisine combines French dishes with African flavors in an expensive melange of tastes. The following islands have all made their mark on the world’s gastronomic stage of late.

1. Anguilla

This is the new Caribbean island to watch in culinary terms, with new restaurants springing up all the time. Historically the cuisine is the typical West Indian polyglot; today an influx of international restaurateurs has added sophistication and quality. Top tip: Sample spiny lobster on the lovely verandah of KoalKeel, a plantation-house restaurant offering a menu merging local and international influences.

2. Barbados

Here you’ll taste the island’s British heritage combined with European, East Indian, and African cuisine to form Bajan cuisine. Vegetables and cereals feature heavily and colorful presentation is paramount. The dish to go for is Bajan chicken and macaroni pie, washed down with copious amounts of locally distilled rum. Barbados’s mega-developed western Gold Coast is awash with quality restaurants. Top tip: go for the seared tuna at romantic, candle-lit The Cliff, where every table has a sea view over the rocks.

3. Jamaica

Enjoy the best jerk in the place where it was invented. Served from open pits, wood fired and topped with corrugated metal, the jerk’s secret ingredients are allspice (called pimento on Jamaica) and Scotch bonnet peppers. Chicken, pork, fish, and even goat can be ordered by the plateful. Top tip: head straight for the simple beach huts of the Boston Jerk Centre in Portland for jerk perfection – reggae is often thrown in for free.

4. Puerto Rico

Although the island is now heavily westernised, there are plenty of places to sample true Puerto Rican gastronomy, which had its roots in Taíno Amerindian, African slave, and in particular Spanish cooking. Top tip: Try mofongo – garlicky fried plantains mashed with shrimp or chicken accompanied by beans and rice – in street shacks around San Juan.

5. St Barts

The epicurean delights of this smart Gallic outpost understandably have a French influence, but here it’s combined with Creole, the Caribbean’s spicy fusion of European and African flavors. The waterside restaurants of capital Gustavia are hard to beat, but don’t leave the platinum credit card at home. Top tip: treat yourself to a seafood extravagance as the sun goes down on the west terrace at Bonito, the brainchild of chef Laurent Cantineaux, latterly of award-winning Daniel in NYC.

6. Trinidad

With the greatest gastronomic diversity in the Caribbean, Trinidad’s food has been tweaked by its Indian, African, Middle Eastern, European, and Chinese origins – all served today with a spicy island taste. Top tip: Sample Trinidadian roti at street shacks across the island.

Secret Places

The heads up on my favorite places, where the bill won’t be wince-inducing.

Sample great Bajan cooking at the Barbados Food & Wine and Rum Festival in November 2013. This annual shindig captures the carefree, celebratory atmosphere of the island and its firey cooking perfectly.

Head to Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke, possibly the best beach shack in the British Virgin Islands, to lunch on mahi-mahi and chicken ribs. Take a swim in the Bubbly Pool afterwards.

Local girl Loucine Brooks has recently been named the new Chef de Cuisine of open-air gourmet restaurant Sjalotte on Curacao in the Dutch Caribbean – go for top-quality Caribbean-European fusion cooking before the prices hit the roof.

Treat yourself to dinner at hilltop Brandywine Estate on Tortola for glorious Mediterranean dishes and the best sunsets in the BVIs. Sit back on the gorgeous paved terrace and sip Painkiller cocktails as the sun slips gently beneath the waves.

The kitchen at legendary water-side Basil’s Bar on Mustique in the Grenadines is open for fresh seafood all day; take a boat trip from Bequia or St Vincent to join in the fun, accopanied by live blues music.

Found harbor-side in Castries, St Lucia’s Coal Pot is the place for fresh stuffed crab. Just give it a miss on days when the cruise liners are in town.

Spring Break Destinations for Every Kind of Traveler

With Spring Break just around the corner, now’s the time to cast aside your studies, hunt down those last-minute deals and plan an unforgettable trip.  Whether you’re looking for a budget beach break, a romantic getaway or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, here’s a roundup of the best Spring Break destinations.

For budget travelers

Bahamas

Nassau Cable Beach - Best Spring Break Destinations

Budget travelers can find good deals in the Bahamas

One of the most affordable destinations in the Caribbean, the Bahamas offer plenty of Spring Break deals, with cheap flights running from the US to Nassau and Paradise Islands and a variety of island cruises available. Lounge on white sand beaches or try your hand at water sports during the day, then hit the beach clubs by night.

Puerto Rico

With a drinking age of 18 and prices far cheaper than most U.S destinations, the aptly nicknamed ‘Island of Enchantment’ is fast becoming a popular alternative to the party hotspots of Mexico. If the pristine beaches and lively nightlife aren’t enough to entice you to Puerto Rican shores, there are plenty of alternative activities to try, from horseback riding to scuba diving to trekking in the rainforest.

Florida

If you’d prefer to stay stateside and cut down on pricey airfares, there are plenty of options in Florida. Hit the beach bars and celebrity studded nightclubs at Panama City Beach, join the crowds at Miami Beach, or get involved in myriad spring break activities in the Florida Keys.

Mexico

We couldn’t complete a spring break roundup without a nod to the student party Mecca of Mexico. If you’re looking for a non-stop roster of sunbathing and parties, head to the beach resorts of Cancun, Los Cabos or Acapulco, but don’t expect to have the beach to yourself – masses of students will be descending on the coast for the busiest season of the year.

For sun seekers

Thailand

If you’re happy to fly further afield, Thailand offers some of the world’s best value beach resorts, with vast beaches, coral filled waters and a notoriously debauched party scene. Spend your time snorkeling or elephant trekking in the jungle, then hit the beach bars at night. Phuket, Hua Hin and Koh Samui are all popular among beach lovers, but be sure to join the masses for one of Koh Phangan’s infamous Full Moon Parties where cocktail buckets and blaring dance music keep the scantily clad revelers dancing until the early hours.

India

Goa Baga Beach - Best Spring Break Destinations

Goa’s Baga Beach

Uncover India’s bohemian roots with a beach vacation in Goa, where you can revel in the laid-back vibe and try wakeboarding, kite surfing and jet skiing, before hitting the beach bars at sunset. Once you tire of the sun, sea and sand, head inland to the ‘pink city’ of Jaipur, home to some of the country’s most spectacular architecture, and undergo a pilgrimage to the magnificent Taj Mahal.

Brazil

With powder white beaches, scorching temperatures and endless Caipirinhas, Brazilians know a thing or two about a beach holiday. Head to Rio where you can soak up the rays on the famous Copocabana beach, hit the waves on neighboring Ipanema and pay a visit to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. If you’d prefer to dodge the crowds, travel north to Natal where you can spread your beach towel on the popular Ponta Negra beach and hit the samba clubs in the evening hours.

South Africa

Few countries boast more sunny days than South Africa and whether you’re after an action packed vacation or a leisurely beach break, there’s something for everyone. Of course, you just might need a trust fund to afford the airfare, but if you’ve got the cash to splash out, a South Africa Spring Break is an unforgettable adventure. Brave the waves on the famous Wild Coast, spot the Big 5 on safari in the vast Kruger National Park or come face to face with Great White sharks on a shark diving excursion from Cape Town.

For adrenaline junkies

Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers myriad activities to get your blood pumping, from hurtling down rapids in a whitewater raft to scaling the crater of an active volcano. For the most mind-blowing experience, make like Tarzan on a rainforest canopy tour, where you’ll get to zip line at breakneck speed through acres of untamed jungle, or zoom along the rainforest floor on an ATV instead.

Belize

Belize scuba divers in Blue Hole - Best Spring Break Destinations

Go underwater in Belize

Home to the second largest Barrier Reef in the world, Belize is the perfect place to strap on some fins and dive to the depths of the ocean on a scuba diving excursion. Another hugely popular activity is cave tubing with Belize harboring one of Central America’s most extensive underground cave networks. Still not exciting enough for you? Try zip lining through the jungle, kayaking through crocodile infested waters or parasailing on the open ocean.

Las Vegas

The bright lights of the famous Strip aren’t just for revelers and gamblers; Las Vegas makes the perfect destination for thrill-seekers, with the vast Grand Canyon right nearby. Take a helicopter flight over the strip, whiz through the Valley of Fire on a dune buggy, brave the Grand Canyon Skywalk, take a sunrise hot air balloon ride or skydive over the spectacular Red Rock Canyon. Or you could just blow your savings on the roulette table.

Niagara Falls

One of Northern America’s most celebrated natural attractions, just catching sight of the thundering Niagara Falls is a thrill but those hoping for an action packed trip can hurtle beneath the falls on a high-speed jet boat, zoom over the top in a helicopter or get a view from a giant tethered helium balloon. Not all activities have to involve the falls, though – go kayaking along the Niagara River, bungee jumping in the Niagara Falls area or climb the precipitous gorge at the nearby Devil’s Hole.

For snow bunnies

Whistler, British Columbia

Just because it’s spring doesn’t mean you have to opt for a beach holiday – swap sand for snow and hit the ski slopes instead. Head to the world-renowned Whistler resort – the continent’s largest ski area – where you’ll have the pick of over 200 ski runs. There’s plenty of snow-free activities to keep you busy on the warmer days too – horse riding, canoeing and mountain biking are all popular pastimes.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

With some of the best ski runs in America, Jackson Hole is a veritable paradise for skiers and snowboarders. Springtime offers warmer weather activities too, so once you tire of the slopes you can hike or horseback ride through the Grand Teton Park, whitewater raft in the Snake River Canyon or explore the legendary landscapes of nearby Yellowstone National Park.

Lake Tahoe

Springtime in Lake Tahoe is the perfect time to explore the area’s idyllic beaches and waterfalls, but those hoping to hit the slopes will find plenty of powder still dusting the peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Squaw Valley and the Heavenly Mountain resorts are popular spots, where you can ski or snowboard through the day, enjoy a beachside barbecue, then party the night away at one of the lakeside casinos.

For couples

Hawaii

Couple in Hawai - Best Spring Break Destinations

Hawaii is great for couples

Whether you take a romantic sunset boat cruise, cuddle up in a luxury eco lodge or just stroll hand in hand along a moonlit beach, Hawaii is a destination tailor-made for falling in love. There are plenty of adventures to be had in paradise too – try your hand at surfing, snorkel among the shimmering corals or take a helicopter ride over the famous ‘Ring of Fire’.

Vancouver

With its impressive mountain-backdrop and park-lined waterfront, Vancouver offers the perfect backdrop for a loved up getaway. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride around Stanley Park, take the ferry over to the picturesque Vancouver Island, then enjoy dinner with a view at Grouse Mountain’s observatory restaurant or on a sunset dinner cruise through Vancouver harbor.

Buenos Aires

Effortlessly cool and oozing with Latino charm, Buenos Aires is the unofficial romance capital of Latin America. Get in the mood with a tango show or dance class; enjoy a stroll through the Palermo Rose Gardens, where you can hire a rowing boat on the lake and visit the planetarium for some sunset stargazing; then head to the waterfront Puerto Madero for dinner with a glittering view of the docks.

San Francisco

With its abundance of art galleries, designer boutiques, hip bars and gourmet restaurants, San Francisco never falls short of ideas for date night. If you prefer some low-key romance, snuggle up on a boat cruise around San Francisco Bay, take a day trip to the Sonoma and Napa Valley wineries or take in the sunset from the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

For Europhiles

Tuscany

Rent a villa in the idyllic Tuscan countryside and spend your days cycling the vineyards and olive groves, pouring over masterpieces in the birthplace of the Renaissance and over-indulging in delicious Italian pastas. Whether you’re after serene landscapes or iconic architecture (don’t miss the famous leaning tower of Pisa), few European destinations offer such variety as Tuscany.

Paris

Alternatively, opt for a memorable sojourn in the City of Lights, where you can breakfast on croissants and shop among the world’s most fashionable people. A trip to the Louvre, the exquisite Château de Versailles and of course, the inimitable Eiffel Tower, are all must-dos, along with a cruise long the River Seine and an entertaining evening at the notorious Moulin Rouge.

Costa Brava, Spain

Costa Brava beach - Best Spring Break Destinations

Join the sunbathers in Costa Brava

If you want to guarantee some warm weather, the glamorous resorts of Spain’s Costa Brava coastline are one of Europe’s most popular springtime destinations. Beloved by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Orson Welles, the vast Mediterranean beaches are not only popular with sunbathers but renowned among surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers, and with a network of hiking and cycling trails running along the coast, you’ll never be short of things to do.

London

You can’t visit Europe without paying a visit to the British capital and even after the excitement of the 2012 Olympics has died down, there’s still lots to see and do in London. Take a tour on the city’s iconic double-decker buses, enjoy a boat cruise along the Thames, watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and get spectacular views of the city from the London Eye and The Shard. Make sure you spare some time for the quintessentially English tradition of afternoon tea at one of London’s glitziest venues.

You’ll find all kinds of activities listed below, including ziplining through jungle canopies, coming face-to-face with the Caribbean’s sea life, horseback riding on white sand beaches, and learning about the unique culture, history, and cuisine of the Caribbean. Join us for this tour of the Top 25 Things to Do in the Caribbean!
1. Zipline through the jungle

Ziplining through the jungle near San Juan

Careening down a thin cable rope with your feet dangling high above the ground is a huge adrenaline rush, which is a big reason why adventurous folks love ziplining. The Caribbean offers some of the best ziplining in the world thanks to its high trees, rainforests and thick treetop canopies. Most islands in the Caribbean that cater to a large number of visitors offer ziplining attractions and some favorites include Zipline Canopy Eco-Adventure from San Juan, Punta Cana Zipline Canopy Adventure and St Kitts Zipline Canopy Tour. While in the Dominican Republic, you can get adventurous above and below the tree canopy line with the Zipline and Horseback Riding Combination Tour in Puerto Plata.
2. Set sail at sunset
The sun setting over the teal and turquoise waters of the Caribbean is a magnificent view to behold and one that is lovely to watch while on the water. Sail the calm seas of the Caribbean to see the sunset on an Aruba Sunset Catamaran Cruise or Luminous Lagoon Night Cruise in Jamaica. Partake in the wonders of sailing around St Martin during a Tall Ship Sunset Cruise. Excite your sense of taste as well as your sight with a Grand Cayman Catamaran Dinner Cruise.
3. Snorkel below the waves

Stingrays in the Cayman Islands

The beauty of the Caribbean descends below the surface of the water. Underneath lightly rippling waves is a world of colorful coral and active marine life. A snorkel trip is a fun way to ensure you see the wonders of underwater life in the Caribbean. Increase your chances of gazing at sea turtles during your vacation by going on the San Juan Snorkel and Picnic Cruise or the take advantage of the large stingray colony that lives there and pet and play with the creatures on a Grand Cayman Stingray City adventure.
4. Hike through the rainforest
Some Caribbean islands, such as Puerto Rico, have their very own rainforest. These rainforests may not be as big and mysterious as the Amazon, but they’re still full of vegetation and animals that are hard to find outside the rainforest’s rich earth. In Puerto Rico, head out on the El Yunque Rainforest Half Day Trip from San Juan. And don’t forget your poncho – it’s not called the rainforest for nothing.
5. Go on a jungle safari

Going a little off-road on a Dominican Republic Mega Truck Safari

Hold on and get ready for a bouncy, rocking drive when you go on a safari ride. You’ll head out in a topless vehicle and leave the paved roads of the Caribbean behind. As you off-road through an island, you’ll get the opportunity to see less-travelled parts of the Caribbean that are ripe with lush trees, wildlife and gorgeous vistas. In the Dominican Republic depart on the Dominican Republic Mega Truck Safari or Dominican Outback Safari to see how the locals live and get the chance to visit sugar cane fields. Nature lovers will enjoy the Jeep Safari Adventure Tour from Montego Bay, which includes a hike to hidden waterfalls. If you love wildlife, hitch a ride on the Curacao North Shore Jeep Safari during which you’ll have the chance to see lizards, wild pigs, flamingos and other birds.
6. Go whale or dolphin watching
Tropical fish and sea turtles aren’t the only species to call the waters of the Caribbean home. Larger mammals also frolic in the waters and if you’re a fan of SeaWorld, you’ll become even more entranced with dolphins and whales by seeing them in their natural habitat. It’s hard to spot them from shore, though, so a cruise out into the sea with experts who know the migration pattern of the animals is the best way to increase your chances of seeing them. From St Lucia, you can depart on the Whale Watching and Dolphin Spotting Cruise from the North Island, which also includes picture-worthy views of the island’s famous Pitons from the sea.
7. Sip some island drinks

Sample Jamaican rum at Appleton Estate

Caribbean locals are passionate about their homegrown drinks, especially their rum – and you may be, too, after trying some. To really understand the love and dedication that goes into the rum grown on the islands, it’s best to participate in a brewery tour, such as the Rum Distillery and Old San Juan Half-Day Tour, which will take you through the world of Bacardi, the largest rum distillery. For more adventurous souls, check out the Black River Safari, YS Falls and Appleton Rum Estate Tour from Negril or the Half-Day Tortola Rum Tasting and Snorkel Tour to mix in some more active excursions with your day of learning about rum. If drinking the rum sounds more fun to you than touring how it’s made, head out on the Bermuda Rum Cruise, which will let you sample and learn about different rums while sailing the Caribbean seas.
8. Take a cruise
The Caribbean is as much about the sea as it is about the islands so it’s important to experience this part of the area as well when visiting. Experience speeding over water and get the chance to feed iguanas on a private island on the Exuma Powerboat Adventure in Nassau, explore St Lucia and a volcano by sea onboard the St Lucia Catamaran Day Sail and use the sea as transportation to an island that is a part of a  nature reserve with the Catamaran Cruise to Saona Island from Punta Cana.
9. Hit the beach in a dune buggy or ATV

Punta Cana Dune Buggy Adventure

If you’ve had enough of the ocean during your cruise vacation, leave it behind and bounce over sand and gravel on a dune buggy or ATV ride. It’s fun, adventurous and a memorable time. An ATV is like a motorcycle, but with more wheels. San Juan ATV Adventure Tour, Jamaica ATV Off-Road Adventure to Sandy Bay, Ocho Rios ATV Safari all offer top-notch ATVs for speeding over the land. 10. Search for waterfalls
The Caribbean is home to a variety of waterfalls; big, small, powerful and trickling. Under the Caribbean’s sun with rainforests and jungles as a backdrop, any type is worth a view. Some give way to pools ideal for swimming in after a long hike to get to the waterfall, such as Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica. Travel there via Dunn’s River Falls and Ocho Rios Shopping Tour or Jamaica Combo Tour: Dunn’s River Falls and Bob Marley’s Nine Mile, both of which offer extra sites to see in addition to swimming at Dunn’s River Falls.  You can also visit a waterfall as part of a day tour that covers much of a city or area, such as Santiago and Jarabacoa Waterfalls in the Dominican Republic and Black River Safari, YS Falls and Appleton Rum Estate Tour from Negril.

12. Go underwater in a new way
Underwater adventures in the Caribbean don’t just need to include snorkeling. There are other fun and adventurous ways to see the sea world beneath the surface. The Nassau SUB Bahamas Adventure is no ordinary sub. Instead, you’re in your own little “Scenic Underwater Bubble” submarine, letting you explore the world beneath at your own leisure. Another new craze fascinating travelers to the Caribbean is the Snuba excursion. Snuba Adventure at Coral World Ocean Park gives you a diver’s view without the need for scuba diving certification. A mix between snorkeling and scuba diving, this Snuba adventure will let you go deeper than you would by snorkeling while still keeping a connection to the surface via the oxygen tube that connects to your underwater helmet.
13. Go horseback riding on the beach

There are few better sensations than being astride a moving horse as the wind whips through your hair and your horse splashes through the shallow waters of the shore. Get that feeling by partaking in a horse riding excursion during your time in the Caribbean. The Heritage Beach Horse Ride in Jamaica and the Scenic Horseback-Riding Tour from San Juan just focus on you, your horse and the surrounding scenery. Learn about his life in Jamaica and about the Rastafarian religion he practiced. You’ll also get the chance to visit his grave.
16. Taste the flavors of the Caribbean
Sometimes when traveling it’s hard to know exactly what cuisine is traditional to the area and where to get authentic versions of that food. That’s when an organized dinner is a great thing to partake in while on vacation. With the Small-Group Dinner Tour in Old San Juan, you’ll get to eat at not one, but four different restaurants with a guide telling you about each dish you try. A dinner cruise is also a lovely way to experience the food of a destination. Tango Caribbean Dinner Cruise in St Maarten and Nassau Small Group Lunch Tour both offer excellent Creole and other local cuisine with stunning views.
17. Take a day trip

It’s easy to hop on a boat and take a day trip to another island

When visiting one of the larger Caribbean islands, you usually won’t need to be worried about becoming locked in by the surrounding sea as there are many day trips you can take to nearby, smaller islands. You’ll finish your day with a drink at the popular Rick’s Cafe, which has stellar views of the sunset.
